According to a report published in the Wall
Street Journal, about one person in 250,000 to 300,000 taking
Serzone will suffer side effects causing liver
failure.
A number of U.S. psychiatrists became concerned about the
Serzone side effects of liver failure following the Canadian
government issued warning on June 20, 2001.
A company spokeswoman at Bristol-Myers was asked why Serzone
side effects warnings
were sent to Canada but not to American physicians of the
possible fatal side effects of liver damage Serzone can cause.
The spokeswoman, Tracy Fury, responded that, "We
didn't' think it was necessary in the U.S. because what happened
in Canada was specific to Canada."

| Drug induced side effects of liver damage
continues to be an important public health problem identified by the
FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. Serzone side effects
of liver damage that has been reported shows the dangers of drug-induced
liver damage that have been reported to occur in over 109 cases. Drug
induced liver damage can cause liver failure that can lead to death.
There have been at least 23 cases of users that have experienced Serzone
side effects of liver failure that resulted in the need for a liver
transplant and/or death. |
Serzone side effects of liver damage have
been found to occur of about three to four times the estimated background
rate of liver failure. This rate is an underestimation because of
underreporting. Serzone side effects cases of liver damage could be
much higher in actuality than reported due to the underreporting that
may occur. A company spokeswoman at Bristol-Myers was asked why Serzone
side effects warnings were sent to Canada but not to American physicians
warning of the possible fatal side effects of liver damage Serzone
can cause. The spokeswoman, Tracy Fury, responded that, "We didn't'
think it was necessary in the U.S. because what happened in Canada
was specific to Canada." |

Currently, Serzone contains Black
Box warning labels that warn of "cases of life-threatening
hepatic failure have been reported in patients treated with Serzone".
The Serzone side effects cases of liver failure that resulted in
death or transplant normally ranged from 2 weeks to 6 months on
Serzone therapy. People with liver failure should be aware of any
of the following Serzone side effects:
- Skin jaundice and yellow eyes
- Bruising
- Swollen stomach
- Itching
- Loss of weight and appetite/ weak muscles
- Pale or black stools/ dark urine
- Tiredness/ loss of concentration/ confusion/
- personality changes
- Problems with sleeping
Serzone side effects of liver damage may require a liver transplant.
A doctor will perform tests to determine if in fact a liver transplant
is the best treatment option. Data on mortality after a liver transplant
for a five-year survival rate is 70%, but past five years there
is a drop off. In 2000, new regulations giving patients access to
livers from a wider geographical area went into effect. The guidelines
ended a nearly two-year battle between Congress and Health and Human
Services Secretary Donna Shalala over how to distribute organs for
transplant. In 1999, about 5,000 people died waiting for organs,
and about 1,200 of those were waiting for a liver. More than 68,000
people are now waiting for organs, with 15,000 of them waiting for
a liver.
With the continuation of liver problems reported in conjunction
with prescription drug side effects, like Serzone antidepressant,
the number of individuals being added to the list waiting for organs
continues to grow.
